I am completely and entirely obsessed with colorful hair, but I’ve never had a lot of options because unfortunately, I can’t have crazy colored hair for my job. I’ve used both semi-permanent and permanent color before when I had more time for it to wash out, but can’t commit to it on a regular basis. I started looking for more temporary solutions when I discovered the L’Oréal Colorista Hair Makeup 1-Day Color. I was a little hesitant, but the description sounded super promising!
L’Oréal Paris Colorista is not a hair dye – it’s makeup for hair! Gentle, ammonia free leave-in formula for one-day temporary hair color that washes out with shampoo. No bleach or gloves required. Mix and match different shades to create your own temporary hair color even on dark hair. No gloves. No damage.

Review and Demo Video
This is my first time trying a video like this, so bear with me!
Process
The instructions say to use on dry, clean hair, so I washed and dried and applied on my natural hair (you know it looks great 😉 ). I applied and then used the blow-dryer and straightener to style my hair. The whole process took about 30 minutes. Since I didn’t have enough to do all over color with one bottle, the color was a little patchy (mainly because I couldn’t see clearly when doing the sides) so this might be a job for two people if you’re doing all over color.
Thoughts & Review
Coverage and Color
One bottle was NOT enough for my hair and I likely needed 2-3 full bottles for full coverage. One bottle was enough to have a nice pastel, mostly ombre, look and I still liked it a lot. The lilac color came out very well, even on my darker blonde hair. Had I had more bottles, I would have applied a little thicker for a more vibrant color.
Smell
The smell of the product was nice and not like hair color at all. It did not smell good when I applied heat but also tried styling before applying and that was a waste of time, as the product is wet and it will undo any straightening or curling.
Cost
I think that the cost is very reasonable compared to some other options that I have found. Each bottle runs $7-9 based on where you purchase and can be purchased for $7.99 each on the L’Oreal website.
Feel
This was my biggest dislike, as the product did dry my hair out a bit and make it feel a little straw-ish. Had I been styling in another way, rather than just straight and down, it may have actually helped with the styling since I was not sure if I could use additional products with it.
Clean-Up
The product washes off skin and towels easily with just water! [I am a little concerned that it may come off that easily with water, so I hope to never get caught in the rain while using this product!]
The Day After
When I woke up the morning after coloring, the color had lasted through the night and had NOT transferred to the white pillowcase that I was sleeping on, which is a big big win in my book. It lasted through my workout, although a little wiped off on my towel as I started sweating. When I washed my hair with shampoo, it came out easily and completely, leaving my hair feeling as soft and clean as it does on a normal day.
For an equally damage-free, but more permanent color, check out my review of oVertone color depositing hair conditioner here!
My Conclusion
Finding this product is a BIG WIN in my book and I can’t wait to use it more regularly for one-day color, whenever I’m feeling like it. It didn’t do any damage to my hair, but was exactly what I needed for one day of color! I think that the cost is very reasonable for what you get and likely would have spent even a few dollars more per bottle for the results that I achieved. I can’t wait to mix and match colors and change it up each day for my upcoming music festival and every day life!
Updates!!
I’ve since used this product two more times with different color combinations and still stand by everything that I said above!! In the first picture below, I used the color Silver Blue, which was meant for blonde hair. Same results as above. In the second pictures, I mixed the Raspberry and Pink Violet colors. To get this more vibrant look, I used raspberry, which is intended to be used on brown or black hair. It did wash out almost completely with the first wash, but I had light tints of pink for a couple more washes, as it stained just a little bit. That was a risk that I took by using a product not intended for my hair, but I would absolutely do it again!
Thanks, I couldn’t figure out if I could apply it to wet hair. Thanks for answering my question!
So glad I was able to help! There was some trial and error with this one for me ☺️
