There has been no change and I am still obsessed with colorful hair and decided that now is the time to try something more permanent while we are working from home. (If you’re looking for a less permanent solution, check out this post!) I did a lot of research and watched 500 Brad Mondo videos and decided that I wanted to try a color depositing conditioner, rather than actual dye. I had seen ads for OVertone on my social media and heard good results from some friends, so I took the plunge and ordered some samples and a full-size option. They have an incredibly vast color selection that I am so excited about. To kick things off, I ordered four colors, three of which are in the pink family (surprise, surprise).
Maegan Scarlett and Liora Dudar were in their 20s when they decided they’d had enough of the fading and constant damage that came with having vibrant hair color. Together, they created a product they had always wanted: a hair-healthy, semi-permanent alternative to dye that could both achieve and maintain head-turning hair colors — sans damage and cold showers. As it happened, Maegan and Liora weren’t alone in their desire for a better hair color option. After launching the brand in 2014, demand skyrocketed and oVertone quickly became known as an industry disruptor in the hair color world. Now, thanks to two hair color enthusiasts, consumers have a means to skip the box dye and pricey salon touch-ups and instead condition their way to a vibrant, healthy hue!

Review and Demo Video
Before I decided what to do for my full color, I did some test strands. I bought four colors: pastel pink, pastel magenta, pastel orange, and rose gold. I was a little unsure about how they would turn out with my darker blonde hair. The pastel magenta was the brightest followed by the rose gold. The pastel pink was a very light pink and I’m not entirely sure I can see the orange at all. I decided on doing mostly pastel magenta for my all-over color with some pastel pink blended in closer to the roots for a bit of a lighter color up top.
Process
The instructions say to use on wet or dry, clean hair, where you’ll get a more vibrant color if you use on dry hair. You can leave on for anywhere from 3-15 minutes based on the color results that you’re looking for. I applied to dry hair and left on for 15 minutes since I wanted the best color I could get. After 15 minutes, I rinsed out with hot water and blow-dried and curled. With the all-over color, I sectioned my hair out but it took less than 10 minutes to apply followed by the wait time.
Thoughts & Review
Coverage and Color
One full-sized container has more than enough for me to color my hair multiple times (my guess is between 6-10 with a liberal application). I was surprised by the vibrance of the color in some spots where I applied more color since I only purchased the pastel magenta. It didn’t seem like I would be that bright on my darker blonde hair, but it’s much brighter than I had anticipated. For the future, if I decide I’d like it a little lighter, it seems I have a few options – 1) apply to wet hair instead of dry hair, 2) apply less conditioner, or 3) leave on for a shorter period of time.
Smell
The smell of the product is amazing! It’s minty (weird I guess) but smells so good to me. No issues or strange smells when applying heat to style!
Cost
For the number of applications that I’ll get, paired with the longer duration of time I expect the color to stay in, I think the price point is very reasonable. You can purchase one full-size container of the hair coloring conditioner for $29. You can also purchase the matching daily conditioner to help extend the color for $18 (or purchase the set together to get $5 off) on the oVertone website. They also sell sample sizes of both products that you can purchase for $11 and $9 to perform test spots. (Or if you plan to color just your ends or certain strands, this might be the better option!)
Feel
The texture of my hair has not changed at all and it feels great. My hair is super soft and I can style as usual with no changes to the feel.
Clean-Up
The product mostly washes off skin with water and soap but does stain a bit. If you’re worried about staining, you can easily wear gloves to apply! My hands were tinted pink for about 12 hours until it wore off. The product washes out of the hair very easily with hot water.
The Long-Term
I don’t know what to expect yet for the longevity of my hair color. I wouldn’t mind it being a little less vibrant so I may let it fade a bit. I’ve also purchased the daily conditioner, but haven’t yet needed to use it to see how it works (will provide updates soon!).
My Conclusion
I’m loving the vibrant results and color selections. Since it’s a color depositing product only, there is no damage to my hair, and it feels incredible! I think that the cost is very reasonable for these results and the pure number of applications that I’ll get. I am definitely going to place an order for some other colors that I’ve been wanting to try! Visit oVertone to browse the incredible color selection! Update!
The color is lasting much longer than expected! After about 4 days, it had lightened up to the color I was hoping for originally and after another 3 days, it was fading out just a little bit (and was spotty where I didn’t apply consistently in the initial application).
Since I was looking for a less vibrant color, I let it lighten to the level that I wanted but I also purchased the daily conditioner, which I have been using once per week just to refresh the color and keep it to the right shade. The upkeep has been so easy and it’s staying in beautifully! Any time I need a little color boost, I just have to apply in the shower and leave for 3-5 minutes! Super easy.
